
We were sitting on the floor of my friend Ali’s living room drinking cups of warm black tea when suddenly his bird, a small green budgie, flew across the room, landed on the kitchen countertop, and collapsed.
There was a short pause, and then Ali immediately jumped up, fear in his eyes as he ran toward the tiny body.
Like many Iranians, he keeps birds at home, and he loves them dearly.
Ali gently picked it up and felt for its heartbeat. It seemed to have stopped, at least that’s what he told me.
